I have been on the Berkeley faculty since 1974, and have studied, since 1972, the processes by which children acquire English as a second language under various conditions in the public schools. The studies I have conducted over the past two and a half decades have been longitudinal in design, and I have direct evidence on how children acquire a second language over time.
